Short answer:

  • Quartzite = harder, more scratch-resistant, typically better day-to-day durability.

  • Marble = timeless luxury, unmatched classic look, slightly more care needed.

If you love dramatic veining with serious durability, lean Quartzite. If you want that iconic, elegant, high-end feel, choose Marble—and treat it with a little extra care.

Quick side-by-side

Factor

Quartzite

Marble

Look

Bold, sweeping veins; “marble look” with more hardness

Iconic whites, greys, and soft veining; classic luxury

Hardness (scratch/chip)

Very hard; excellent wear resistance

Softer; can scratch/chip with sharp/abrasive contact

Stain resistance

Polished quartzite rates very well when sealed

Needs diligent sealing and quicker wipe-ups

Etching (acids)

Does not etch at all (not calcium-based)

Can etch with acids (lemon, tomato, vinegar)

Fixability

Can be re-polished/honed; chips repairable by pros

Also repairable/polishable by stone pros

Resale value & luxury

High—natural, rare, premium

Highest—timeless prestige and designer appeal

Price (slab) – guide

~$4–5k per slab (varies by colour/rarity)

~$2–20k per slab (very large price range)

Care level

Low–moderate (seal, pH-neutral clean)

Moderate (seal, prompt wipe-ups, avoid acids)

Which should you choose?

Choose Quartzite if you:

  • Want serious durability with bold, high-impact veining

  • Prefer lower maintenance (with sealing) and fewer worries about etching

  • Are happy to invest more per slab for day-to-day toughness

Choose Marble if you:

  • Want the most timeless, luxurious look possible

  • Don’t mind a bit more care (wipe acids quickly, reseal as advised)

  • Love subtle to dramatic veining that screams “classic high-end”

Pro tip: Always view the actual slabs in-person. Stone varies wildly depending on the batch and quarry. Confirm lengths for your island, ask for sequential/book-matched sets, and check flatness/finish.

FAQs

Is quartzite “maintenance-free”?

No bench top surface is maintenance-free. Quartzite is low-maintenance when sealed, but still clean with pH-neutral products and wipe spills.

Will marble always stain and etch?

With sealing and prompt cleanup, marble stays beautiful. Expect some patina over time—that’s part of its charm.

How often do I need to seal them?

Depends on the specific stone, finish, and use. Harsher usage requires more frequent sealing. Follow the advice of your stonemason.

Can I cut on the benchtop?

Use a cutting board (to save your knives, not your bench top!). Quartzite can blunt knives; marble can mark—and your knives will dull fast.

Hot pots on stone—okay?

Both stones are heat-tolerant, but use trivets to protect sealers and avoid thermal shock.
