Maintenance

To keep your stone in the best possible condition, a little care and maintenance is always the best option.

Basic Maintenance

Cleaning:  Lukewarm water, a pH neutral cleaner or methylated spirits is best for regular cleaning. Wipe surfaces with a damp chamois to avoid streaks. Wipe off anything spilled immediately, taking care not to spread the spill. Rinse the spill area with plenty of water.

Cleaning products:  Do not use abrasive cleaners (powders or pastes like Jiff) as these products can scratch the stone.

Periodic maintenance:  Use a good quality impregnation sealer every couple of years for granite. Marble or limestone need to be sealed on a more frequent basis.

Stone flooring:  Flooring needs to be cleaned regularly with a dry dust mop. Sand and dirt do the most damage to the stone surface due to their abrasiveness.

Stone Care Essentials

  • Using coasters under all glasses is ideal, paying particular attention to alcoholic or citrus drinks for marble, limestone, or travertine benchtops.
  • Place mats should be used when placing hot cookware on the stone surface. Sudden and extreme temperature changes can cause permanent damage to benchtops.
  • Chopping boards should always be used (if you have a granite benchtop, chopping on the benchtop will not damage the stone. It will only dull the knife!)
  • Care must be taken with heavy pots and pans as dropping them on a natural stone surface can damage the stone.
